We discuss the content , distribution and the very notion of starting a new paper magazine while others are going out of business every month.

From last weekend’s Wizard World Chicago Comicon I moderated this panel with DC artist Ethan Van Sciver . In addition to words about his early art beginnings , Ethan looks back at his original creation Cyberfrog, creating new villians for The Flash and Green Lantern, his transformation of Sinestro into the modern threat he represents to current DC continuity and discusses his future plans which include some writing such as a new story in October’s Untold Tales Of The Blackest Night .

In addition Ethan arranged for a baby grand piano for the room, and performed several f his original songs about Wolverine , Star Trek, The BP Oil disaster , and a post nuclear war future.

By the way, in the center that's the recently convicted Illinois ex-govenor Rod Blagoevich, flanked by Ethan and his pal Gil.

Part 2 of our conversation with DC Comics artist Francis Manapul is all about his new reality tv show Beast Legends, currently airing on History Television Canada. The show's US debut is September 9th on Syfy. Francis discusses his role on the show as on the scene sketch artist, bringing mythical creatures to life in his sketchbook.

On this episode of Word Balloon, we begin a 2 part conversation with artist Francis Manapul, and discuss his dazzling art on books like the Flash and Adventure Comics with Geoff Johns. You'll hear abourt his takes on Connor Kent, and Barry Allen and the evolution of his art style from his days at Top Cow, to the present.

Francis tells us about his comic beginings, the influences on his art from the Image founders to Mike Weirringo, and we discuss the role philipino artists have played in american comic books, going back to the bronze age.

I was honored to host this spotlight panel focusing on the careers of Kathryn and Stuart Immonen from their beginnings in the late 1980’s black and white independent comics scene in Toronto.  We talk about their first joint project Playground a punk rock murder mystery , and subsequent work for Vortex Calibre and Revolutionary Comics .

They also go in-depth about their new graphic novel Moving Pictures from Top Shelf, which collects the entire story that was first presented as a weekly web comic. Stuart discussed how he arrived at the style for the web comic, which he could conform to without straying too far from his daily drawing style for books like Ultimate Spider-Man and New Avengers .  You’ll also hear about their next collaboration which is just getting started called Russian Olive To Red King.

You’ll hear about Kathryn’s latest writing efforts  from the recent weekly 5 part mini series Heralds for Marvel , her Shamrock story in Girls Comics drawn by Colleen Coover, and call backs to her work on Runaways with Sara Pichelli and Hellcat with David LaFuente . Kathryn promises more Patsy Walker/Hellcat in the near future.

Stuart also discusses the prospects of more Nextwave from himself and Warren Ellis, and his current work on New Avengers with Brian Bendis.
